Called God in Acts 5:4 and the Spirit of the Lord in Acts 5:9. Acts 5:3-10 reads as follows:

Acts 5:4 and the Holy Spirit is known from the Scriptures to be a person who; hears, speaks, convinces, testifies, convicts, prays for us, leads, guides, teaches, prompts speech, commands, forbids, desires, helps, and groans. The Holy Spirit can be blasphemed, lied to, resisted, grieved by sin and the Holy Spirit gives all believers spiritual discernment and he is eternal. (Hebrews 9:14)

Our Lord Jesus said in John 14:16-18 “And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwellleth with you, and shall be in you. I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.” The apostle Paul in his first letter to the Corinthians writes, “Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaketh by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is Lord, but by the Holy Ghost (1 Corinthians 12:3).

'Other' - The word that changes the Nature of the Unchangeable Word

'Other' has been inserted into the WTB&TS published passage of Colossians 1:14-20 five times. This is an error. Through presuppositional consistency within WT published works we know that this laborious effort to present the Son of God as merely a created being is a willful denial of the interwoven theme of the Scriptures. The Word of God reveals that the Son of God as no less in substance and/or essence than God the Father is in substance and/or essence yet a distinct personage of the Godhead (see following section). However, being obedient to the will of the Father, Christ took upon the nature of mankind (yet without sin) to be the prophesied propitionary sacrifice that is the redeemer of mankind.

It should also be noted that the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society began publishing the Benjamin Wilson biblical work called The Emphatic Diaglott (ED) in 1942. The ED front page reads "containing the original Greek Text...(According to the Recension of Dr. J.J. Griesbach) With An Interlinear Word For Word English Translation..."

Griesbach, in the Word for Word English transliteration of the Greek text does not place the English word 'other' anywhere in the passage of Colossians 1:14-20.

God does not approve of worship of anything or anyone outside of Himself. He is a jealous God (Exodus 20:5) and jealous for His holy name (Ezekiel 39:25). The Scriptures are absolutely clear and without invitation to any private interpretation. The word of God is it’s own cross-reference.

God is worshipped in the Old Testament at various locations and temples and worshipped in the New Testament in a body or tabernacle made without hands in the person of Jesus and testified of the Holy Spirit. Two God breathed testaments written in blood oaths and yoked inseparably with the complete law, testimony, hope, and love of His revelation to a lost creation.

One God and one God alone as Deuteronomy 4:39 states, “Know therefore this day, and consider it in thine heart, that the LORD he is God in heaven above, and upon the earth beneath: there is none else.” God is worthy of our praise and honor and He is to be glorified above all creation. If Jesus is a created being and not God then why didn’t our Lord Jesus rebuke the people for worshipping him when he knew the word of God better than anyone? Not once did he rebuke being worshipped, he only forbad it to be known until the Father wanted it to be made known of him (Mark 5:43; 7:36; 8:30, Luke 4:34-35, 41; 8:56; 9:20-21, John 2:23-25).

In Jesus dwells the fullness of the Godhead bodily (Colossians 2:9) He is the express image of God (Hebrews 1:3) He is the power of God, and the wisdom of God. (1 Corinthians 1:24) He is our life (Colossians 3:4) God gives the light of the knowledge of the glory of God and it shines from the face of Jesus Christ (2 Corinthians 4:6) and He is the Lord of Glory (1 Corinthians 2:8).

21 And upon a set day Herod, arrayed in royal apparel, sat upon his throne, and made an oration unto them.22 And the people gave a shout, saying, It is the voice of a god, and not of a man.23 And immediately the angel of the Lord smote him, because he gave not God the glory: and he was eaten of worms, and gave up the ghost.

There is only one God (Isaiah 43:10; 44:8) and there is no other God but Him (Deuteronomy 4:35) .

He is a jealous God and commands us not to have any other gods before Him. (Exodus 20:3, 5; 34:14) The Son of God is given the glory of God (John 17:5,24) and the same honor of God the Father (John 5:23).

God the Father commands ALL the angels of God to worship the Son of God (Hebrews 1:6). Creation is to only worship God (Matthew 4:10, Revelation 19:10; 22:9).

God shares His throne with Jesus (Revelation 22:3). God does not share His glory with another (Isaiah 42:8).

The earth is God’s footstool. The earth is Christ’s footstool. Christ is God and the earth is His footstool. God does not give even a whisper in all of Scripture that a created being has any birthright or authority to what He rightfully owns Himself and has purchased with His own blood.

Revelation 22:18-21

Revelation 22:12 states “And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me,” while verse 13 identifies the person who made the statement in the previous verse as the “Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last.” Who is this? John tells us in Revelation 22:20, that the person speaking in verse 12 is none other then the Lord Jesus Christ. Furthermore, we know that he which says, “Behold, I come quickly” is the Lord Jesus Christ from a cross reference of Revelation 1:16-17; 2:16; and 19:15 from the phrase “the sword of my mouth” stated in Revelation 2:12,16; and 19:11-15.

The Watchtower Society taught up until 1943 that the ‘second presence’ of Christ was in 1873 or 1874, while after 1943 the Society changed its mind to the date of 1914. (God’s Kingdom of a Thousand Years has Approached, 1973, WTB&TS, p. 206, 209 and Prophecy, 1929, WTB&TS, p. 65,66) By the ink of their own pen has the Watchtower Society exposed and condemned themselves as false prophets. Manifesting dates of the ‘end times’ through vast chronological dating is fruitless because anyone could create a system of dates for their own private interpretation and anyone could tell you that Christ came back on this day or that day but the word of God says in Matthew 24:26-27 “Wherefore if they shall say unto you, Behold, he is in the desert; go not forth: behold, he is in the secret chambers; believe it not. For as lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.” When the Lord comes back, the sun itself will seem like a flickering candle compared to the brightness of his coming and great and terrible will that day be.

The fact is that 1915 did not see the end of the world and since one second past January 1916 there should not have been one single God fearing individual following the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society. Sadly, there are six million Watchtower Society members around the world today. Pray for them.

Our Lord said that only a wicked and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign:

The Kingdom Interlinear Translation of the Greek Scriptures, New World Translation Bible committee, 1985 ed. WTB&TS and International Bible Students Association, cites Philip Harner on page 1140 in support of the ‘the Word was a god’ rendering. On the Appendix 2A, p.1139 the KIT cites the following eight bible versions, of the which, all eight of them translate the Koine Greek of John 1:1 to be rendered as the following;

““1808 - “and the word was a god”, The New Testament, in An Improved Version, Upon the Basis of Archbishop Newcome’s New Translation: With a Corrected Text, London.

1829 - “and the Logos was a god”, The Monotessaron; or, The Gospel History, According to the Four Evangelists, by John S. Thompson, Baltimore.

1864 – “and a god was the Word”, The Emphatic Diaglott (J21, Interlinear reading), by Benjamin Wilson, New York and London.

1935 – “and the Word was divine”, The Bible – An American Translation, by J.M.P. Smith and E.J. Goodspeed, Chicago.

p. 1139 “Therefore, John’s statement that the Word, or Logos, was “a god” or “divine” or “godlike” does not mean that he was the God with whom he was. It merely expresses a certain quality about the Word, or Logos, but it does not identify him as one and the same as God himself.”

p. 1139-1140 “Since the indefinite article is inserted before the predicate noun in such texts, with equal justification the indefinite article “a” is inserted before the anarthrous qeoj in the predicate of John 1:1 to make it read “a god.” The Sacred Scriptures confirm the correctness of this rendering.”

In Appendix 2A, the KIT makes it very clear through the sources it uses that the Word/Logos [Christ] is not God but ‘a god’. In the very next paragraph, the KIT cites Philip B. Harner’s article in the Journal of Biblical Literature:

p. 1140 “In his article “Qualitative Anarthrous Predicate Nouns: Mark 15: 39 and John 1:1,” published in Journal of Biblical Literature, Vol. 92, Philadelphia, 1973, on p. 85 Philip B. Harner said that such clauses as the one in John 1:1, “with anarthrous predicate preceding the verb, are primarily qualitative in meaning. They indicate that the logos has the nature of theos. There is no basis for regarding the predicate theos as definite.” On p. 87 of his article, Harner concluded: “In John 1:1 I think that the qualitative force of the predicate is so prominent that the noun cannot be regarded as definite.”

The above citation steers the reader to the assumption or understanding that John 1:1 cannot be translated as ‘the Word was the God’, with ‘the’ being the definite article. Cleverly, albeit deceptively the WT concludes throughout the entire context of Harner’s words that Harner acknowledges that the proper rendering of John 1:1 is “and the Word was a god.” They make a direct connection with the quotes of “…no basis for regarding the predicate theos as definite” and “the noun cannot be regarded as definite.” With just a few quotes from Harner’s article the reader is under the impression that Harner had supported the WTS’s rendering of John 1:1, ‘the Word was a god’.

In the Journal of Biblical Literature Harner gives the following possible clauses for John 1:1:

A. ho logos en ho theos
B. theos en ho logos (the clause in which John wrote – John 1:1)
C. ho logos theos en
D. ho logos en theos
E. ho logos en theios

Here is what the WTS failed to mention from the exact same article in the Journal of Biblical Literature;

p. 85 “John evidently wished to say something about the logos that was other than A and more than D and E. Clauses B and C, with an anarthrous predicate preceding the verb, are primarily qualitative in meaning. They indicate that the logos has the nature of theos. There is no basis for regarding the predicate theos as definite. This would make B and C equivalent to A, and like A they would then contradict the preceding clause to John 1:1.

p. 85 “As John as just spoken in terms of relationship and differentiation between ho logos and ho theos, he would imply in B and C that they share the same nature as belonging to the reality theos. Clauses B and C are identical in meaning but differ slightly in emphasis. C would mean that the logos (rather than something else) had the nature of theos. B means that the logos has the nature of theos (rather than something else). In this clause, the form that John actually uses, the word theos is placed at the beginning for emphasis.

p. 86-87 “These examples illustrate the difficulty of translating the clause accurately into English. The RSV and the Jerusalem Bible translate, “the Word was God.” The New English Bible has, “what God was, the Word was.” Good News for Modern Man has, “he was the same as God.” The problem with all of these translations is that they could represent clause A, in our analysis above, as well as B. This does not mean, of course, that the translators were not aware of the issues involved, nor does it necessarily mean that they regarded the anarthrous theos as definite because it precedes the verb. But in all of these cases the English reader might not understand exactly what John was trying to express. Perhaps the clause could be translated, “the Word had the same nature as God.” This would be one way of representing John’s thought, which is, as I understand it, that ho logos, no less than ho theos, had the nature of theos.

A few of the above KIT biblical references to John 1:1 versions quoted in the KIT actually themselves leave some doubt of whether the WTS was honest in the way it quoted from the source. For example;

v Benjamin Wilson, the author of the Emphatic Diaglott (1872) actually translates John 1:1 to read; “In the Beginning was the LOGOS, and the LOGOS was with GOD, and the LOGOS was God. [Wilson does not use the indefinite article “a” in the English when he translates the Greek to English.]

v The Emphatic Diaglott contains the original Greek text of the ‘The Vatican Manuscript, No. 1209, in the Vatican Library yet Charles T. Russel, the founder of the Watch Tower Society writes in the 1924 edition of Studies in the Scriptures, Series II, The Time is at Hand, ‘We have shown that the Papal Heirarchy (even if it were composed of the most moral and upright of men – which is not the case, as all history testifies) is the Man of Sin, the Anti-Christ, the counterfeit and misrepresentative of Christ’s Millennial Kingdom, skillfully arranged so as to deceive.” The WTS uses a Greek Text that is used by what it calls to be the ‘Anti-Christ’ organization. Also, the ED does not claim to be inerrant or free from error. (p.4 ED preface)

v The New World Translation of the Christian Greek Scriptures (1950, WTB&TS) uses the Greek text of the “widely accepted Westcott and Hort text (1881), by reason of its admitted excellence.” (Foreword, p. 8.) Another Greek text used is that of D. Eberhard Nestle and his Novum Testamentum Graece (1948). Furthermore, the Greek transcripts of that of Spanish Jesuit scholar Jose Maria Bover and his Novi Testament Biblia Graeca et Latina (Joseph M. Bover, S.J., Madrid, Spain 1943), are also mentioned as a ‘consideration’ in the translation. Page 8 of the NWTCGS reads;

“The Greek text that we have used as the basis of our New World Translation is the widely accepted Westcott and Hort text (1881), by reason of its admitted excellence. But we have also taken into consideration other texts, including that prepared by D. Eberhard Nestle and that compiled by the Spanish Jesuit scholar Jose Maria Bover and that by the other Jesuit scholar A. Merk. Where we have varied from the reading of the Westcott and Hort text, our footnotes show the basis for our preferred reading.”

The Westcott and Hort Greek text is the sole Greek text source in the New Testament of The Emphasized Bible, Joseph Bryant Rotherham (1959) and Rotherham translates John 1:1 as “the Word was God.”

The text of Nestle, cited authoritatively by the NWTCGS, is also the Greek text used for The Interlinear New International Version – Parallel New Testament in Greek and English, Reverend Alfred Marshall (1976) and the New American Standard Version, The Lockman Foundation (1973). Both Marshall and the translators of the Lockman Foundation translate John 1:1: “the Word was God.”

Lastly, a Jesuit scholar named Jose Maria Bover and his Novi Testament Biblia Graeca et Latina by Joseph M. Bover, S.J.(1943. published at Barcelona, Spain.) is also mentioned or ‘considered’ as authoritative in the NWTCGS. The Kleist – Lilly New Testament was translated directly from Bover’s Novi Testament Biblia Graeca et Latina and translates John 1:1 “When time began, the Word was there, and the Word was face to face with God, and the Word was God.”

The WTS cites the Greek texts of; Westcott and Hort, D. Eberhard Nestle, and Jose Maria Bover, as the basis for the NWTCGS yet all of them render John 1:1 as “the Word was God’. Mr. Harner is misrepresented and this is proof.

Dr. James Moffatt

Author of various biblical works including, The Complete Bible – An American
Translation, and, A New Translation of the Bible

The WTS quotes from the works of Mr. Moffatt in the New World Translation of the Christian Greek Scriptures (1950) on page 773 in which the heading begins with the assumption that the Logos is properly rendered as, ‘a god’ as the Appendix reads on page 773; “John 1:1 – “a god’.

Mr. Moffatt is cited and quoted in the following passage in the New World Translation of the Christian Greek Scriptures:

p. 773 “”A New Translation of the Bible by Dr. Jas. Moffatt reads likewise: “The Logos existed in the very beginning, the Logos was with God, the Logos was divine.” (1935 edition) Every honest person will have to admit that John’s saying that the Word or Logos “was divine” is not saying that he was the God of whom he was. It merely tells of a certain quality about the Word or Logos, but it does not identify him as one and the same as God.””

Again, we can conclude from the above quotation that Dr. Moffatt ascertains from John that Jesus is not God. However, In Jesus Christ the Same, Abingdon – Cokesbury, 1945, Dr. Moffatt writes on page 61 the following words:

“The Word was God…And the Word became flesh’, simply means “The Word was divine…and the Word became human. The Nicene faith, in the Chalcedon definition, was intended to conserve both of these truths against theories that failed to present Jesus as truly God and truly man…”

Dr. Moffat, in short, gives the reader all that is needed to be known about who he believes Jesus to be in Jesus Christ the Same when he say’s “…was intended to conserve both of these truths against theories that failed to present Jesus as truly God and truly man”.

Dr. Julius R. Mantey

Author of Manual Grammar of the Greek New Testament

In the New World Translation of the Christian Greek Scriptures we also find the authoritative work of Dr. Julius R. Mantey used in support of the theology of the WTS.

p. 774 ““Careful translators recognize that the articular construction of the noun points to an identity, a personality, whereas an anarthrous construction points to a quality about someone. That is what A Manual Grammar of the Greek New Testament by Dana and Mantey remarks on page 140, paragraph vii. Accordingly, on page 148, paragraph (3), this same publication says about the subject of a copulative sentence:

“The article sometimes distinguishes the subject from the predicate in a copulative sentence. In Xenophon’s Anabasis, …and the place was a market, we have a parallel case to what we have in John 1:1, and Theos was the Logos, and the word was deity. The article points out the subject in these examples. Neither was the place the only market, nor was the word all of God, as it would mean if the article was used with Theos.”

“Instead of translating John 1:1, and the word was deity, this Grammar could have translated it, and the word was a god, to run more parallel with Xenophon’s statement, and the place was a market.”

“…it is presumptuous to say that such a definite article is to be understood so that the sentence should therefore be translated “and the Word was God”. That would mean that the Word was the God with whom the Word was said to be. This is unreasonable; for how can the Word be with the God and at the same time be that same God?”

The WT’s premise heavily relies on the testimony of Dr. Mantey and his grammatical knowledge of the Greek language to produce their own, ‘the Word was a god’ rendering. However, Dr. Mantey disagrees and disagrees to the point in which he threatened action against the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society if it continued to use him to support the belief system of the WTB&TS.

In the investigative film Witnesses of Jehovah (1988 Good News Defenders, P.O. Box 8007, La Jolla, CA 92038) Dr. Mantey say’s this in the television interview:

“I have never found any so-called translation that goes so far away from what the Scripture actually teaches as these books published by Jehovah’s Witnesses. They are so far away from what there is in the original Hebrew and the original Greek…you can’t follow theirs because it’s biased and its deceptive because they deliberately changed words in the passage of Scripture to make it fit into their doctrine, they distorted the Scripture in many facets, scores and scores of passages in the New Testament dealing with the deity of Christ especially.”

Dr. Mantey also states in Depth Exploration in the New Testament (1980, New York, Vantage Press) on pages 136-137:

“I have never read any New Testament so badly translated as the Kingdom Interlinear Translation of the Greek Scriptures…it is a distortion of the New Testament. The translators used what J.B. Rotherham had translated in 1893, in modern speech, and changed the readings in scores and scores of passages to state what Jehovah’s Witnesses believe and teach. That is a distortion not a translation.”

Dr. Julius Mantey is adamant in his attitude toward the writings of the WTS. To read the actual letter that Mantey wrote after he learned that he was cited in the Watch Tower publications go to www.bible.ca/trinity/trinity-Mantey.htm.

Dr. Walter Martin, the founder of the Christian Research Institute (CRI) and publisher of numerous Christian Apologetic works, interviewed Dr. Mantey. The following dialog contains the interview.

Dr. Walter Martin: In John 1:1, the New World Translation (NWT) says that “the Word was a god,” referring to Jesus Christ, How would you respond to that?

Dr. Julius Mantey: The Jehovah’s Witnesses (JW’s) have forgotten entirely what the order of the sentence indicates – that the “Logos” has the same substance, nature, or essence as the Father. To indicate that Jesus was just “a god,” the JW’s would have to use a completely different construction in the Greek.

Dr. Martin: You once had a little difference of opinion with the Watchtower about this and wrote them a letter. What was their response to your letter?

Dr. Mantey: Well, as a backdrop, I was disturbed because they had misquoted me in support of their translation. I called attention to the fact that they whole body of the New Testament was against their view. Throughout the New Testament, Jesus is glorified and magnified – yet here they were denigrating him and making him into a little god of pagan concept.

Dr. Martin: What was their response to what you said?

Dr. Mantey: They said I could have my opinion and they would retain theirs. What I wrote them didn’t phase them a bit.

Dr. Martin: I don’t know whether you’re aware of it, but there is not a single Greek scholar in the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society. I did everything I could to find out the names of the translating committee of the NWT, and the WT wouldn’t tell me a thing. Finally, an ex-JW who knew the committee members personally told me who they were, and the men on that committee could not read New Testament Greek; nor could they read Hebrew; nor did they have a knowledge of systematic theology – except what they had learned from the WT. Only one of them had been to college, and he had dropped out after a year. He briefly studied the biblical language while there.

Dr. Mantey: He was born in Greece, wasn’t he?

Dr. Martin: Yes, he read modern Greek, and I met him when I visited the WT. I asked him to read John 1:1 in the Greek and then said, “How would you translate it?” He said: “Well, ‘the word was a god.’” I said: “What is the subject of the sentence?” He just looked at me. So I repeated, “What is the subject of the sentence?” He didn’t know. This was the only person in the WT to read Greek and he didn’t know the subject of the sentence in John 1:1. And these were the people who wrote back to you and said that their opinion was as good as yours.

Dr. Mantey: That’s right.

Dr. Martin: Often we find JW publications quoting scholars. Do they quote these people out of context?

Dr. Mantey: No. They use this device to fool people into thinking that scholars agree with the JW’s. Out of all the Greek professors, grammarians, and commentators they have quoted, only one (a Unitarian) agreed that “the word was a god.”

Dr. Martin: You have been quoted as saying that the translators of the NWT are “diabolical deceivers.”

Dr. Mantey: Yes. The translation is deceptive, and I believe it’s a terrible thing for a person to be deceived and go into eternity lost, forever lost because somebody deliberately misled him by distorting the Scripture.

Dr. Martin: What would you say to a JW who was looking for the truth?

Dr. Mantey: I would advise him to get a translation other then the NWT, because ninety-nine percent of the scholars of the world who know Greek and who have helped translate the Bible are in disagreement with the JW’s. People who are looking for the truth ought to know what the majority of the scholars really believe. They should not allow themselves to be misled by the JW’s and end up in hell.

Dr. Mantey said, “There is no statement in our grammar that was ever meant to imply that ‘a god’ was a permissible translation in John 1:1” and “It is neither scholarly nor reasonable to translate John 1:1 ‘The Word was a god.’” Michael Van Buskirk, The Scholastic Dishonesty of the Watchtower, P.O. William Barclay

Former Professor of Divinity and Biblical Criticism at Glasgow University. Authored seventeen New Testament volumes in The Daily Bible series (published by Westminster John Knox Press) and has authored more than fifty other books.

The WTS quotes William Barclay in the Watchtower, May 15, 1977 and it quotes from Barclay’s book, Many Witnesses, One Lord, 1963, pp. 23,24.

p. 23-24 “the noted Bible translator William Barclay writes’ “Now normally, except for special reasons, Greek nouns always have the definite article in front of them…When a Greek noun has not got the definite article in front of it, it becomes a description rather than an identification, and has the character of an adjective rather than of a noun. We can see exactly the same in English. If I say: ‘James is man,’ then I am simply describing James as human, and the word man has become a description and not an identification. If John had said ho theos en ho logos, using a definite article in front of both nouns, then he would definitely have identified the logos (the Word) with God, but because he has no definite article in front of theos it becomes a description, and more of an adjective than a noun. The translation then becomes, to put it rather clumsily, ‘The Word was in the same class as God, belonged to the same order of being as God…John is not here identifying the Word with God. To put it very simply, he does not say that Jesus was God’.”

In Many Witnesses, One Lord on page 23-24, we find what was left out from the WT in the previous mentioned citation. [bold highlighted word font left out from the WT citation of Barclay]

p. 23-24 “In a matter like this, we cannot do other than to go to the Greek, which is theos en ho logos. Theos is the Greek word for God, en for was, ho for the, logos for word. Now normall, except for special reasons, Greek nouns always have the definite article in front of them, and we can see at once here that theos the noun for God has not got the definite article in front of it. When a Greek noun has got the definite article in front of it, it becomes a description rather than an identification, and has the character of an adjective rather than of a noun. The translation then becomes, to put it rather clumsily, ‘The Word was in the same class as God, belonged to the same order of being as God.” The only modern translator who fairly and squarely faced this problem is Kenneth Wuest, who has “The Word was as to his essence essential deity.” But it is here that that the NEB has brilliantly solved the problem with the absolutely rendering: “What God was the Word was.” John is not here identifying the Word with God. To put it very simply, he does not say that Jesus was God’.”

p. 27 “God himself took this human flesh upon him.”

The following is an excerpt of a letter to David Shoemaker of Biola College by William Barclay after Mr. Shoemaker conveyed these deceptive tactics by the WT to Mr. Barclay on August 26th, 1977

[“Dear Professor Donald Shoemaker,

Thank you for your letter of August 11th. The Watchtower Article has, by judicious cutting, made me say the opposite of what I meant to say. What I was meaning to say, as you well know, is that Jesus is not the same as God, to put it more crudely, that he is of the same stuff as God, that is of the same being as God, but the way the Watchtower has printed my stuff has simply left the conclusion that Jesus is not God in a way that suits themselves.”]

The 1953 Issue of The Expository Times quotes Barclay:

“the deliberate distortion of the truth by this sect is seen in their New Testament translation…It is abundantly clear that a sect which can translate the New Testament like that is intellectually dishonest.”

The Barclay New Testament, 1969, Vol. 1., Tyndale House; translates John 1:1 the following:

John 1:1 “When the world began, the Word was already there. The Word was with God, and the nature of the Word was the same as the nature of God.”

Dr. Bruce Metzger

Princeton Professor of New Testament Language and Literature

Dr. Metzger’s work (Bruce M. Metzger and Michael D. Coogan) Oxford Companion to the Bible is cited in Should You Believe in the Trinity, 1989. WTB&TS. Pages 782-783 of the Oxford Companion are quoted in this manner by the WTS:

p. 782-783. “Because the Trinity is such an important part of later Christian doctrine, it is striking that the term does not appear in the NT. Likewise, the developed concept of three coequal partners in the Godhead found in later creedal formulations cannot be clearly detected with the confines of the canon …(Mt 28:19 … Matthew records a special connection between God the Father and Jesus the Son but he falls short of claiming that Jesus is equal with God. … it is important to avoid reading the Trinity into places where it does not appear.”

The full text should help the reader get a less ambiguous idea of what Metzger actually said. On pages 782-783, Metzger writes;

“Because the Trinity is such an important part of later Christian doctrine, it is striking that the term does not appear in the NT. Likewise, the developed concept of three coequal partners in the Godhead found in later creedal formulations cannot be clearly detected with the confines of the canon. Later believers systematized the diverse reference to God, Jesus, and the Spirit found in the New Testament in order to fight against heretical tendencies of how the three are related Elaboration on the concept of a Trinity also serves to defend the church against charges of di or tritheism. Since the Christians have come to worship Jesus as a god (Pliny, Epistles 967), how can they claim to be continuing the monotheistic tradition of the God of Israel. Various answers are suggested, debated, and rejected as heretical, but the idea of a Trinity, one God subsisting in three persons and one substance ultimately prevails. While the New Testament writers say a great deal about God, Jesus, and the Spirit of each, no New Testament writer expounds on the relationship among the three in the detail that the later Christian writers do. The earliest New Testament evidence for a tripartite formula comes in 2 Corinthians 13.13, where Paul wishes that “the grace of the Lord Jesus, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit” be with the people of Corinth. It is possible that this three part formula derives from later liturgical usage and was added to the text of 2 Corinthians as it was copied. In support of the authenticity of the passage, however, it must be said that the phrasing is much closer to Paul’s understanding of God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit than to a more fully developed concept of the Trinity. Jesus, referred to not as Son but as Lord and Christ, is mentioned first and is connected with the central Pauline theme of grace. God is referred to as a source of love, not as Father, and the Spirit promotes sharing within the community. The word “holy” does not appear before “spirit” in the earliest manuscript evidence for this passage. A more familiar formulation is found in Matthew 28:19, where Jesus commands the disciples to go out and baptize “in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” The phrasing probably reflects baptismal practice in churches at Matthew’s time or later if the line is interpolated. Elsewhere Matthew records a special connection between God the Father and Jesus the Son (e.g., 11.27), but he falls short of claiming that Jesus is equal with God (Cf. 2436). It is John’s gospel that suggests the idea of equality between Jesus and God (“I and the Father are one”; 10:30). The Gospel starts with the affirmation that in the beginning Jesus as Word (see Logos) “was with God and …was God” (i.i.), and ends (chap. 21 is most likely a later addition) with Thomas’s confession of faith to Jesus, “My Lord and my God” (20:28). The Fourth Gospel also elaborates on the role of the Holy Spirit as the Paraclete sent to be an advocate for the believers (John 14.1526). For the community of John’s gospel, these passages provide assurance of the presence and power of God both in the ministry of Jesus and in the ongoing life of the community. Beyond this immediate context, however, such references raise the question of how Father, Son, and Spirit can be distinct and yet the same. This issue is debated over the following centuries and is only resolved by agreement and exclusion during the christological disputes and creedal councils of the fourth century and beyond. While there are other New Testament texts where God, Jesus, and the Spirit are referred to in the same passage (e.g. Jude 20:21), it is important to avoid reading the Trinity into places where it does not appear. An example is 1 Peter 1.1-2, in which the salutation is addressed to those who have been chosen “according to the foreknowledge of God the Father in holiness of spirit.” This reference may be to the holiness of the spirit of believers, but translators consistently take it as the Holy Spirit in order to complete the assumed trinitarian character of the verse: 11 who have been chosen and destined by God the Father and sanctified by the Spirit” (NRSV). This translation not only imposes later trinitarian perspectives on the text but also diminishes the important use of the spirit of human beings elsewhere in 1 Peter (e.g., 3.4, 19)”

The manner in which the WTS cites or quotes their sources represents a clear and present danger to their sources. The danger lies within the deceptive intent of the citer and not the citation, it lies in the fact that the source is cited in a way that distorts what the source actually said in the full context.

Furthermore, Metzger is interviewed in the film, Jehovah’s Witnesses – A Non-Prophet Organization, 1994, Witness Inc. P.O. Box 597, Clayton CA 94517 Fax (510) 672-8230. In the interview, Metzger says:

“The ordinary reader is totally misled by the show of supposed scholarship that these people introduce into their translation, it’s a sham kind of scholarship, this could be called not a separate version of the bible in this respect it’s a perversion of the bible, they introduce the word Jehovah 237 times in the text of the New Testament and it does not occur once in any known Greek manuscript, that I don’t think is responsible scholarship. Still more key having to do with the person of our Saviour Jesus Christ, they try every time that they can manage it to denigrate the status of Christ, the eternal Son of God to a created being. They even distort the first verse of the gospel of John, “in the beginning was the Word…the Word was with God…the Word was a god …spelled the word God with a little g…that’s terrible.”

In The Jehovah’s Witnesses and Jesus Christ.” Theology Today, April 1953, p. 75.Bruce Metzger states:

“It must be stated quite frankly that, if the Jehovah’s Witnesses take this translation seriously, they are polytheists… As a matter of solid fact, however, such a rendering is a frightful mistranslations.”

A.T. Robertson

Co-Author with W. Hershey Davis of A Short Grammar of the Greek New Testament

A.T. Robertson is quoted in the New World Translation of the Christian Greek Scriptures (1950, WTB&TS). On page 775 we read:

““Here we agree with Dr. A.T. Robertson when he says: “ ‘God and ‘love’ are not convertible terms any more than ‘God’ and ‘Logos’ or ‘Logos’ and ‘flesh.’ . . . The absence of the article here is on purpose and essential to the true idea.” (Page 768, A Grammar of the Greek New Testament) John’s inspired writings and those of his fellow disciples show what the true idea is namely, the Word or Logos is not God or the God, but is the Son of God, and hence is a god.””

In addition, further on down the page the WT tries to connect both Robertson and Mantey. Again on page 775, “With a reference to the Grammar by Dr. Robertson the Manual Grammar by Dana and Mantey, p. 140 says…The above disposes of the trinitarian argument that the article was omitted before Theos in the predicate of John 1:1 according to the general rule that it was needed, but would be understood. On page 761 Robertsons’s Grammar says: “Among the ancient writers ho theos was used of the god of absolute religion in distinction from the mythological gods.” So, too, John 1:1,2 uses ho theos to distinguish Jehovah God from the Word (Logos) as a god, “the only begotten god” as John 1:18 calls him.”

The WTS neglects to write what Robertson had said after “Among the ancient writers ho theos was used of the god of absolute religion in distinction from the mythological gods.” Dr. Robertson continues in the second sentence following, “In the New Testament, however, while we have pros ton theon (John 1:1-2) it is far more common to find simply theos, especially in the Epistles.” When broken down into laymen’s terms, Robertson is simply saying that the New Testament writers rarely used the definite article because the one true God was the subject of the verse. Robertson also says the following:

“So in John 1:1 theos en ho logos the meaning has to be the Logos was God, not God was the Logos.” A New Short Grammar of the Greek Testament, by A.T. Robertson and W. Hersey Davis (Baker Book House, 1977), p. 129.

In Word Pictures in the New Testament, Vol. V, pp. 158-159, Robertson writes of John 8:58, “Undoubtedly here Jesus claims eternal existence with the absolute phrase of God.” (Excerpt taken from Handbook of Today’s Religions, McDowell & Stewart, 1983)

F.F. Bruce

Professor University of Manchester, England and has authored a New Testament translation

The WTB&TS sites yet again another Greek scholar. In The Bible – God’s Word or Man’s? professor Bruce is cited on pages 19 and 58. On page 58-59, the WT writes of Bruce:

“It can have been by no means so easy as some writers seem to think to invent words and deeds of Jesus in those early years, when so many of His disciples were about, who could remember what had and had not happened…The disciples could not afford to risk inaccuracies (not to speak of willful manipulation of the facts), which would be exposed by those who would be only too glad to do so.”

Ironically, the Apologetics Index (www.gospelcom.net/apologeticsindex/j01.html) tells us exactly where Bruce stands in his own words regarding John 1:1:

“Much is made by Arian amateur grammarians of the omission of the definite article with ‘God’ in the phrase “And the Word was God.’ Such an omission is common with nouns in a predicative construction…’a god’ would be totally indefensible.”

B.F. Westcott

New Testament Scholar and Co-Editor of The New Testament in the Original Greek (1881) with F.J.A. Hort

The Kingdom Interlinear Translation of the Greek Scriptures (1985, WTB&TS) cites the Greek text of B.F. Westcott and F.J.A. Hort as the basis for their KIT. Westcott’s, ‘Saint Paul’s Epistle to the Ephesians (1906, New York) is also cited on page 1146 and 1158 of the KIT. B.F. Westcott writes in, ’The Gospel According to St. John’;

“The predicate (God) stands emphatically first, as in v.24. It is necessarily without the article (theos not ho theos) inasmuch as it describes the nature of the Word and does not identify His Person… No idea of inferiority of nature is suggested by the form of expression, which simply affirms the true deity of the Word.” The Gospel According to St. John, Eerdmans, 1958, reprint), p. 3.

Amazingly, the WTS basis it’s KIT on the Greek text of Westcott and Hort but yet contradicts Westcott and Hort in various places that substantially change the meaning of the passage, namely; John 1:1; 8:58; 10:33; Colossians 1:16, 17, 20; Titus 2:13; Hebrews 1:6. To B.F. Westcott, “No idea of inferiority of nature” clearly reveals that the Holy Scriptures identified Jesus Christ to be of the same nature or substance as God, the Father.

John L. McKenzie

The WTS does not mention what else McKenzie said on page 28. McKenzie says:

“It is for this reason that the title ho theos, which now designates the Father as a personal reality, is not applied to Jesus Himself: Jesus is the Son of God (of ho theos). This is a matter of usage and not of rule, and the noun is applied to Jesus a few times. Jn 1:1 should rigorously be translated “the word was with the God [=the Father], and the word was a divine being”. Thomas invokes Jesus with the titles which belong to the Father. “My Lord and my God” (Jn 20:28). The glory of our great God and Saviour which is to appear can be the glory of no other than Jesus.”

Notice that McKenzie calls YHWH “a divine being.” In addition, McKenzie say’s that Jesus is called “God” in John 20:28 and Titus 2:13 while also relaying in John 1:1-18 he speaks of “an identity between God and Jesus Christ.” Dictionary of the Bible (New York: Macmillan Publishing Co., 1965), p. 317. These are just a few of the biblical scholars used as authoritative by the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society. The Scholastic evidence herein shows any honest person that the WTS has misrepresented these men in order to validate it’s own authority on the word of God. What the WTS has done here cannot be passed off as ignorance or even accidental, no, this is a much more grave level of contempt for the truth as they have willfully deceived its members and readers into thinking that the WTS is actually true and of God and they have maliciously thrown the names of many reputable grammarians and scholars into perpetuating this big lie.

The Preaching of the Cross

The WTB&TS erroneously claims that Christ was 'impaled on a Torture Stake' rather than crucified on a Cross. WTB&TS founder Charles Taze Russel and former WTB&TS President J.F. Rutherford clearly taught that Christ was crucified on a cross.

The Watch Tower’s current teaching is that Christ was ‘impaled’ on a torture stake (stake) and that the cross is a Pagan symbol that was not used as the method of execution of the Lord Jesus. Here are a few of the contradictions that are found in Watch Tower publications concerning their teaching of the cross. One might want to ask a member of the WT Society, ‘If the cross is a pagan symbol then why was the founder of the WTB &TS using it as a symbol on his ‘Studies in the Scriptures’ series? Why are there pictures of Christ on a cross in WT publications? And why is the cross of Christ specifically mentioned, if in fact Christ was crucified on a stake?

The Watchtower Society favorably cites the Jewish historian Flavius Josephus (37 – 100 A.D.) in; ‘The Bible – God’s Word or Man’s’, 1989, WTB &TS, p. 60-61; ‘Is The Bible Really The Word Of God’, 1969, WTB &TS, p.63, 118,119; ‘Mankind’s Search For God, 1990, WTB & TS, p. 66, 67, 213. On page 66-67 of the latter we read “in the face of historical evidence” Flavius Josephus quoted as saying the following:

““42. This same historian also testified to the historical existence of Jesus Christ, when he wrote that there arose “a certain Jesus, a wizard of a man, if indeed he may be called a man…whom his disciples call a son of God.” He continued by saying that “Pilate had sentenced him…And even now the race of those who are called ‘Messianists’ after him is not extinct.”” (Footnote at bottom of page reads “According to the traditional text of Josephus,”)

However, The New Complete Works Of Josephus, William Whiston & Commentary by Paul L. Maier, 1999, Kregel Publications, p. 590, offers the complete rendering in which the Watchtower Society failed to note. Here is what Josephus actually said in his eighteenth book of his Antiquities:

“3. (63) Now there was about this time Jesus, a wise man, if it be lawful to call him a man; for he was a doer of wonderful works, a teacher of such men as receive the truth with pleasure. He drew over to him both many of the Jews and many of the Gentiles. He was [the] Christ. (64) And when Pilate, at the suggestion of the principal men among us, had condemned him to the cross, 2 those that loved him at the first did not forsake him; for he appeared to them alive again the third day, 3 as the divine prophets had foretold these and ten thousand other wonderful things concerning him. And the tribe of Christians, so named from him, are not extinct at this day.” (Footnote 2, A.D. 33, April 3; footnote 3, April 5)

It should also be noted that the Watchtower Society cites the first century historian Josephus’ ‘The Jewish Antiquities’ in Reasoning from the Scriptures, 1985, 1989, p. 209 (WTB&TS).

In Studies in the Scriptures, Series II, The Time is at Hand, 1924, Charles Taze Russel writes on page 52 that Josephus’ chronological dates “are now generally recognized as reckless and faulty. We rely on the bible alone, believing God is his own interpreter.”

From a picture of Christ on the cross to the cross being a symbol of the god Tammuz the Watchtower Society, who claims to be the ‘prophet of God’ (WT, 1/15/1959, p. 40-41; WT, 4/1/1972, p. 197; Awake, 6/8/1986, p. 9) we learn of more contradictions. Let this not be an issue that you base an entire argument upon, however, this is clear evidence that WT doctrine and historicity of the WTB&TS is bogus and should raise concerns about all other doctrinal ascertations.

The Emphatic Diaglott, published by the WTB&TS in 1942, contradicts the the New World Translation (1984 WTB&TS) and the Kingdom Interlinear Translation (1985 WTB&TS)renderings of the word or term "torture stake" and uses the word 'Cross'.

The contradiction is noted in Matthew 10:38 which reads in the KJV:

"And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me."

The Emphatic Diaglott translates this Greek root word to 'Cross' in both the word-for-word transliteration and the right column which is 'based upon that in the left-hand column, and the labors of many talented critics and translators of the Scriptures" (p. 8 ED)

The Kingdom Interlinear Translation ascribes the word 'stake' from this exact same Greek root word (hyperlinked above)

Matthew 10:38 in the KIT reads in the English transliteration and the right hand column "And whoever does not accept his torture stake* and follow after me is not worthy of me."

(*) Torture stake is footnooted to an Appendix which leads readers to believe it is a Pagan symbol. Page 1149- 3C reads in brief "There is no evidence that the Greek word stau-ros' here meant a cross such as pagans used as a religious symbol for many centuries before Christ."

The NWT translates Matthew 10:38 to read "torture stake" with no appendix or asterisk while in the 1950 translation 'New World Translation of the Christian Greek Sciptures' draws the conclusion in an appendix notation that the cross was used by ancient pagans to "denote the sun-god. In addition, this appendix also notes that "ancient sculptures of Egypt may be seen representing their gods bearing the so called crux an sa'ta, a T-cross with the loop at the top."
